As digital services continue to reshape how consumers open accounts, make payments and access financial products, businesses are under growing pressure to create onboarding experiences that are both secure and seamless. Yet many organisations still rely on manual document uploads, bank statements and legacy verification processes that introduce friction, increase abandonment rates and slow down customer acquisition.
Globally, a shift is underway toward non-document verification methods that use trusted data sources to validate customer information instantly and securely. These solutions not only improve the user experience but also help businesses strengthen compliance, reduce fraud and make faster onboarding decisions.
Against this backdrop, Sumsub has launched South Africa Bank Account Verification (BAV), a document-free solution that enables businesses to verify bank account ownership and account status in real time through South African Reserve Bank (SARB) AVS infrastructure.
“Across the world, we’re seeing businesses move beyond document-based verification towards faster, more secure ways of establishing trust,” said Andrew Novoselsky, Chief Product Officer at Sumsub. “As digital fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated, organisations need verification methods that strengthen security without creating unnecessary friction for legitimate customers. Our South African Bank Account Verification solution helps businesses verify account ownership in real time using trusted banking infrastructure, supporting compliance while delivering a faster and more seamless onboarding experience.”
A smarter approach to bank account verification
South Africa Bank Account Verification allows regulated businesses to confirm whether a bank account exists, is active and belongs to the customer providing the information, without requiring document uploads, screen-scraping, or access to online banking credentials.
The solution leverages South Africa’s interbank Account Verification Service (AVS) infrastructure and is supported across the country’s major banking institutions, providing coverage for approximately 91% of the banked adult population. This gives businesses broad reach through a single integration while delivering a more streamlined customer experience.
The process is simple. During onboarding, users enter their South African ID or passport number, last name, bank name and account number, with explicit user consent. The information is then validated in real time against banking verification infrastructure connected to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) ecosystem.
Within seconds, businesses receive verification indicators that confirm identity and account ownership, including ID and surname match status, account existence, account status, credit and debit acceptance, and confirmation of account tenure.
By replacing manual checks with automated validation, organisations can accelerate onboarding, improve operational efficiency and reduce the burden on compliance teams.
Strengthening compliance and reducing fraud
For businesses operating in regulated sectors such as banking, fintech, payments, lending, gaming and e-commerce, verifying the ownership of a bank account has become an important layer of risk management.
South Africa Bank Account Verification supports a range of compliance and operational use cases, including customer due diligence (CDD), enhanced risk scoring, payout validation, debit-order pre-authorisation, refund security and beneficiary verification.
By matching customer identity data against trusted banking records, businesses can help prevent third-party fraud, identity misuse and money-mule activity before funds are paid out or services are activated.
The solution also supports organisations in meeting requirements under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) and industry guidelines established by the Payments Association of South Africa (PASA), while aligning with data privacy principles outlined in the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Privacy-first verification
One of the most significant benefits of modern bank account verification is that it can provide assurance without exposing sensitive financial information.
Unlike screen-scraping solutions or certain open banking models, South Africa Bank Account Verification functions purely as a data-matching service. It does not access, process or expose account balances, transaction histories, spending behaviour or online banking credentials.
Instead, businesses receive only the verification indicators needed to confirm account ownership and account status. This minimises data exposure while maintaining a high level of confidence in the verification outcome.
For consumers, the result is a faster and less intrusive onboarding experience. For businesses, it means gaining stronger verification signals without increasing privacy risks.
Part of a global shift toward non-document verification
South Africa’s launch forms part of a broader global trend toward frictionless, data-driven verification technologies. As digital fraud becomes more sophisticated and consumer expectations continue to evolve, organisations are increasingly seeking ways to establish trust without relying on manual documentation.
Bank Account Verification is emerging as a valuable tool within modern digital identity ecosystems because it combines speed, security and compliance in a single verification flow. Through its expanding Bank Account Verification offering, Sumsub enables businesses to access localised verification methods across multiple markets through one platform, supporting global growth while maintaining local compliance standards.
As organisations continue to balance fraud prevention, regulatory obligations and customer experience, real-time bank account verification is set to play an increasingly important role in helping businesses build trust from the very first interaction.
BAV is now available through the Sumsub platform for eligible businesses operating in regulated industries.
