BuuPass Secures Strategic Investment from Yango Ventures to Scale Mobility Tech in Africa

BuuPass, a Kenyan mobility fintech startup, has secured strategic funding from Yango Ventures, the investment arm of global ride-hailing group Yango. The exact funding amount remains undisclosed.

Founded in 2016 by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi, BuuPass operates a B2B2C mobility marketplace, enabling users to search, compare, and book bus and travel tickets through its web platform, mobile app, and USSD channels. Its SaaS platform for bus operators streamlines operations, automates ticketing, and boosts revenue through inventory and sales management.

To date, BuuPass has sold over 16 million tickets, generating more than $100 million in gross bookings. The startup previously participated in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and secured support from the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund.

BuuPass’ 2023 $1.3 million pre-seed round and the acquisition of South African travel tech platform QuickBus marked key milestones in its growth journey. The latest funding from Yango Ventures, a $20 million Africa-focused corporate venture fund launched in April, signals a strategic partnership aimed at long-term expansion across the continent.

“We are building more than a tech company; we’re creating a transport ecosystem that empowers African travelers and operators alike,” said Kabra. “Yango brings not just capital but strategic insight and global networks.”

Yango’s Strategic Entry into Africa’s Mobility Space

Yango Ventures’ investment is part of its broader mission to support early-stage African startups in mobility, fintech, and tech-enabled services. According to Yango Group CEO Daniil Shuleyko, the fund is about creating meaningful impact by sharing expertise and scaling startups that drive real change.

Powering the Future of Digital Transport in Africa

With this funding, BuuPass aims to expand its footprint in Kenya and other African markets, advancing its goal of digitizing the African transportation industry and providing seamless, accessible travel solutions for millions of users.
